Peer To Peer Multimedia Streaming Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Peer To Peer Multimedia Streaming - Essay Example However, the increase in the number of viewers, along with the rise in a number of other online applications, has made this architecture ineffective because of bandwidth bottleneck issues. One solution introduced to solve this problem is peer to peer (P2P) technology, wherein peers automatically relay streams to other peers. The P2P network they are connected to performs an algorithm that helps peers ï ¬ nd a relay for a speciï ¬ ed stream to connect to. In multimedia streaming service, the important factors to observe are playing time and network bandwidth utilization. The purpose of this report is to present a solution to these issues. The proposal is to utilize P2P caching service that exploits the proximity of connected clients, i.e. the temporal and spatial locality of cached streams to the clients. In this scheme, connected peer clients not only receive multimedia streams from a server but also send cached streams to peer clients like a proxy server upon request. One P2P technology that can support this architecture is called inter-overlay optimization. Figure 1 shows the different approaches employed in multimedia streaming starting from the centralized client-server topology to decentralized schemes, which includes IP multicast and P2P solutions. P2P can be further sub-divided into mesh-based, tree-based and hybrid overlays. Each peer can accept media data from multiple parents as well as provide services to multiple children (both parent and child are relative terms in place of master-slave relationship). The advantages of this solution are high resource utilization and fast discovery of fresh peers in a single mesh due to gossiping. The disadvantages are: quality of service cannot be guaranteed due to gossiping among peers and large buffer space needed to reduce the impact of autonomy of peers (in a dynamic environment). Example applications are Coolstreaming, Promise, and GNUStream. Each peer communicates only with one parent (per overlay) and provides service to a number of children such that a ââ¬Å"treeâ⬠topology is always maintained (in an overlay). The advantages of this solution are: closely resembles original IP multicast ideas and low management overhead.

Article Critique - Essay Example They also identify the environment used for the research, which was an Australian primary school. The data collected was primarily interviews with staff and students, observations conducted on the playground, and document analysis. The data was verified and tested via triangulation, member checking, and auditing. The most obvious drawback of this study is that it took place on a very small sample, a single primary school. Thus, it would be difficult to generalize the results of this study to primary school populations as a whole. The literature review is particularly well-balanced. Longaretti and Wilson note that most teachers perceive conflict as negative, but conflict is at the center of learning and development. This focus on the positive side of conflict helps the reader eliminate any personal bias he may have toward conflict before beginning the heart of the study. In addition, the authors use the literature review to briefly examine the types of conflict management that teacher s employ with students. After the literature review, the authors begin the discussion of their study. They note that the sample size for the study was small but explain that this choice was to concentrate in more depth on the issues as ââ¬Å"insiders.â⬠While the explanation is valid, it certainly does not rectify the problems that accompany a small sample size, such as skewing of data and limited applicability of conclusions to other populations. In examining the data, the researchers tabulated teacher and student responses to conflict and then the types and frequency of different conflict management strategies. The research revealed that all students and teachers described conflict as negative. But, the degree to which they found conflict to be negative governed their actions. Students who described conflict as very negative often resolved it in a negative manner, i.e. with more conflict. Likewise, teachers who saw conflict in a more negative light often used more aggressive conflict management strategies such as authoritarianism. The authors note that these results match those of several studies conducted in America and New Zealand. While noting that fact, it is still debatable as to whether this research is productive as the results seem predictable even without study. The authors do note that teachers and students do not utilize complex conflict management skills. They posit that this deficiency is due to the perception of conflict. The most useful part of the study is that it suggests that teachers and students would benefit from training in conflict management and in their perception of conflict. I have always felt that conflict was positive. While physical conflict is destructive, most conflict leads to learning. Without intellectual conflict, most of the major discoveries we enjoy would not have been made. Our most productive times in history have been when disagreements between two great thinkers have spurred development. The famous political d ebates between Hamilton and Jefferson immediately spring to mind. In the end, conflict is necessary in the education process. We simply must train teachers to see themselves not as disciplinarians but as facilitators. Then, the perception of conflict and the types of conflict manageme

Analysis of Strategic Risks in South Africa Essay
Analysis of Strategic Risks in South Africa - Essay Example This essay is one of the best examples of analysis of different specific kind of risks in political, social and economic environment of South Africa, that greatly influence a company operation. It critically looks at the political, economic, financial and social Risks and gives insights into how a corporation should position itself in order to gain the best of results in South Africa. Political risk refers to risks relating to the governance and control of the various peoples in a given nation. The inherent political risks in South Africa have to do with the nature of social exclusion practiced in the country for a long time. However, power is in the hand of a popular the Black African majority government. The constitution gives a lot of room for strikes, trade unionism and demonstrations, which reignites the strategy used by the Congress and the people power that comes with the current government. This means that a corporation entering the market needs to understand its microcosmic position and make adjustments to meet these elements of favoritism, nationalism, mass action and corruption. There is also economic risks that are connected with the high cost of doing business in South Africa and other factors like the entry of Chinese businesses who have control of affairs. There are also financial risks relating to credit risk and money transfer issues. Managing across culures is quite difficult. However, the cultural risk in South Africa is increased by the fact that the cultural diversity is huge. ... The World Cup brought South Africa surpluses in its balance of trade in the past year and increased its GDP its previous yearsââ¬â¢ data. With the weakening US Dollar, a business that seeks to operate in South Africa will find it relatively more expensive to trade in South Africa that it would in other parts of the world. Unemployment Unemployment rates in South Africa currently stand at 25.3% and this is blamed on the peopleââ¬â¢s demands for high wages and better working conditions than other parts of the world (SouthAfrica.Info, 2011). This therefore presents a labor risk to the nation. This is because these conditions show that clearly, labor is expensive in the country. This therefore means that any business that seeks to open up a branch in this country needs to be willing to pay more for labor. International Trade International trade in South Africa is increasingly becoming skewed in favor of the Brazil, India, China and Russia and nations like China in particular has a lot of control in the affairs of South Africa (SouthAfrica.Info, 2011). This therefore means that any company from a country not in this category risks losing out to the competition posed by these nations that are favoured by international treaty in South Africa. This therefore makes it more prudent for a corporation to consider other international expansion options that makes good use of outsourcing to remain competitive and acquire a favorable image in the South African market. Financial Risks General Financial Risks The World Bank gives South Africa 68% for credit worthiness indicating that although it is a low risk country to do business in there is still some risk to do business there (Adar, 2008) The Currency Risks South Africaââ¬â¢s Rand is quite stable

United States And European Union Relations Research Paper
United States And European Union Relations - Research Paper Example Concurrently, the EU established the European Climate Change Programme with the intent of ââ¬Å"identifying the most environmental-friendly and cost-effective ways to enable the EU to meet its target under the Kyoto Protocol.â⬠The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement bridged to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Its main attribute is that it sets binding goals for 37 developed countries and the European countries for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The European Commission issued its schemes for a new energy policy for Europe. This represents the EUââ¬â¢s attempt to align its energy and climate policies. Typified as setting the pace for a ââ¬Å"new global industrial revolutionâ⬠, it asserts to commence the process of delivering a low carbon economy for Europe. However, the Commission needs to improve and expand the EUETS because of some limitations and to address criticisms. US and EU views on how to embark upon global climate c hange have been characterized by widely conflicting opinions on the significance of technology, the economic costs, the role of developing countries and the nature of importance of binding multilateral diminutions targets with or without trading means. However, with the enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol, and the recognition by the Kyoto Parties that medium to longer-term targets is likely to be complex to achieve than the previous commitment period Kyoto targets, the chance to move the pursuit of climate change agenda has arisen.

Rape in the Military II Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Rape in the Military II - Essay Example Investigating and reporting The Sexual Assault Training Oversight and Prevention Act (STOP Act) to be implemented soon proposes to take the responsibility of investigation and reporting of sexual assaults outside the purview of regular chain of command of the military and bring them under the jurisdiction of an autonomous office manned by civil and military experts. The Bill H.R.3435 moved by Congress Woman Speier Jackie is currently under the consideration of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel (Speier, n.d.). Response to victims It has been suggested that women victims should not remain silent about sexual assaults on them and they should approach and report the assault to MPs, JG, JAG, EEO and Civilian authorities and not to stop until someone takes up the cause. Best way is to file complaint with local and military police without delay and ensure that complaint is made to outside the military channels. Military on its part should be compassionate towards the victims. They shou ld consider the cases individually without assuming all women are liars and avoid prejudgment. The victims or witnesses should not be punished for reporting sexual assaults. It should be the policy to separate the victim and offender by sending the offender to a different unit. The transfer of the offender to another unit only transfers the problem to another unit or if the offender is discharged, then the problem is dumped on the society (Nelson, 2002). As such the offender should undergo reformation before he is released to the society or transferred to another unit. Confidential counseling The rape victims should be offered confidential rape counseling but they should not be compelled. Survey results suggest that counseling as the most appropriate way of helping the rape victims. Importantly, the offer of counseling should be made immediately and the counseling should be done by an expert trained and experienced in sexual trauma problems. In case non- availability of counselors o n the campus, prompt referrals should be made to outside experts who would include civilian counselors also. The first responders to the rape reporting such as commanders, hospital staff and the military police should be adequately apprised of the need for prompt and appropriate referrals. Though confidentiality is essential, Privacy Act 1974 exempts officers and employees to have access to the information so that they can decide on the victimââ¬â¢s fitness for military duty. The victims should be encouraged to talk freely to an expert who is not connected to the case. Rape victims may be referred to veteran center or civilian health facility and not to military mental health clinic. The rape victims are comfortable with a female supervisor who will not hesitate to take positive course of action. Every chain of command should have an EEO position since victims complain that male officers do not listen to them at all. The recommendations should include that investigators should â â¬Å"quit concentrating ââ¬Å"90 % of the victimsââ¬â¢ genuineness and 10 % on the offender. Multiple complaints on the same offender should be relied up on as a valid evidence of the assailantââ¬â¢s character. It has been suggested that these crimes should be prosecuted in accordance with the current laws and regulations. The victim should be provided with a legal representative. Written transcripts of all hearings should be supplied to victims. Under no circumstances, should victims be charged with. Intervention between

Optimism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Optimism - Essay Example Furthermore, the study concludes that irrespective of its nature, components, and roots, optimism has remarkably positive impact on human life and conditions. Defining Optimism Anthropologist, Lionel Tiger defines optimism as ââ¬Å"a mood or attitude associated with an expectation about the social or material future-one which the evaluator regards as socially desirable, to his [or her] advantage, or for his [or her] pleasureâ⬠(18 qtd. in Peterson 44).On the other hand, optimism is attributed to be a sense of personal control, and ability to identify meaning in oneââ¬â¢s own life experiences. Optimism is a valuable psychological resource which is long believed to be associated with mental health (Frankle, 1963; Seligman, 1998; Taylor, 1989 qtd. in Taylor et al. 99).Such psychological resources become extremely important when individuals are exposed to challenging or threatening occurrences (Taylor 1164).These resources work as reserves which enables people to cope with diffi cult situations in an efficient manner (Taylor et al. 99).Theorists Scheier and Carver(1985) referred optimism as a generalized anticipation that good as compared to bad will happen an individual confronts problem in crucial domains of life(qtd. in Franken 476). In general, the idea of optimism refers to an individualââ¬â¢s overall positive approach towards life and what it has to offer. Biological Component of Optimism Lionel Tiger (1979) puts forth the biological explanation of optimism. He maintains that in early days, when human left forests, being hunters they had to face death and injuries continuously. Because human mind is inclined towards learning from experiences, he abandoned the tasks associated with negative results. Therefore, it is biological adaption for humans to develop a basic sense of optimism. Furthermore, Tiger argues that when human body is injured, it releases endorphins. Generally, endorphins have two attributes; analgesic attributes which decreases the f eeling of pain, and feelings of euphoria. Humans are biologically adaptive to positive emotions when injured in order to keep the process going (hunting) due to our ancestorsââ¬â¢ experiences, therefore, optimism is a trait which is induced biologically (Franken 1994, qtd. in Dunavold 4). Several theorists believe that optimism is a personality trait rather than an emotion. They regard optimism as an inborn temperament which means that people are inherently optimistic or pessimistic ( Dunavold 4). Learned Component of Optimism Many researchers believed that optimism is a way of thinking which can be learned. As Martin Seligmanââ¬â¢s idea of learned optimism, in addition to Daniel Goleman confirm that the concept that both hope and optimism can be learned. He identifies that self-efficacy leads to hope and optimistic view in life. Self-efficacy refers to the belief that one has control over life events and his ability to meet the challenges as they appear in life (qtd. in Dunav old 4). However, Dunavold disagrees with the theory and states that, ââ¬Å"... optimism can (not) be learned. Dr. Seligmanââ¬â¢s method of teaching optimism relies heavily on active thought processes which I believe is more of a cognitive activity...Optimism can (not) be reinforced or stifled.
